Lloyd Dobler (John Cusak) has just graduated from high school and he is in love with Diane Court (Ione Skye), a brilliant and beautiful valedictorian. Lloyd is about to take the chance of his life when he calls Diane and asks her out on a date, a date which Diane accepts without knowing who Lloyd really is. At the end of the date she feels very comfortable in Lloyd's company and they begin a friendship, which is getting more intimate with time. However, Diane is about to go away to college on a fellowship that she has earned through hard academic work in high school. Where is the relationship going?
