MAGDALENE SISTERS (2002)

Magdalene Sisters is a story based on the true events around the catholic Magdalene Sisters Asylum in Ireland.  This story takes place in the 1960s when the three girls Margaret, Rose, and Bernadette are sent to the sisterhood for their "immoral" behavior.  Margaret's (Anne-Marie Duff) "immoral sin" was being raped by her cousin, Rose (Dorothy Duffy) gave birth to a child out of wedlock, and Bernadette (Nora-Jane Noone) has been caught flirting with boys.  At the Magdalene sisterhood the girls are subjected to repeated physical, psychological, and sexual abuse through which they learn that any attempt to resist conformity of the sisterhood is futile.  Helplessly the girls works as slaves as they make large amounts of profits for the sisterhood.  Mullan captures the painful message of true events brilliantly through the three adolescent girls, which is enhanced by the terrific misé-en-scene and cinematography.  This leaves the audience with a brilliant cinematic experience.
