| HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (2004) | |
|
|
Harry
Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is anxiously awaiting his third year at Hogwarts
School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as he slaves a way at Uncle Vernon's,
his legal guardian. Frequently Harry is harassed by the family and
it gets worse as Uncle Vernon's mother is visiting. This leads to
Harry using magic outside of the Hogwarts School, which is strictly
forbidden, and he escapes his tormentors. On the road alone in the
night Harry discovers the depressing influence of loneliness, but shortly
after the discovery of seclusion he is approached by a pair of large
glowing eyes. The eyes stare at him through some bushes as he can
see a large shadow and hear a chilling growl. The strange creature
throws Harry backwards, but he is saved by an enchanted bus. The bus
brings him to safety where he learns that the murderer Sirius Black has
escaped Azkaban, which no man has ever managed, and he is now looking for
Harry.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third installment of the Harry Potter books that have been adapted to the silver screen, and it is an improvement from the second adaptation. The director Alfonso Cuarón brings Harry Potter's maturation into the light as he enters adolescence and is forced to deal with the complexity of emotions, thoughts, and facts. Cuarón does a marvelous job depicting development of the adolescents in the film, which displays the ambiguous nature of people that is based on their individual choices. The depiction of the human ambiguity brings a dark atmosphere to the film that enhances the thrilling grip that the film has on its audience. However, occasionally the story feels rushed as it leaps from scene to scene as if the characters had no choice. In the end, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban offers a terrific cinematic experience. |
