GARDEN STATE (2004)

Garden State is a tale of a young actor, Andrew Largeman, who lives in California where he also works as a waiter to make ends meet and through a death in the family he has to face his own detached existence.  Andrew's detachment is contributed to by heavy medication and emotional neglect rooted in his childhood, which has had dire consequences on his life until the present day.  As Andrew returns home to the Garden State, New Jersey, he has to reconnect with his past as he tries to find a meaning in his existence.  The internal search that Andrew goes through is a painful path where he is forced into an emotional sphere where he must confront his repressed memories and feelings.  This leads the audience into a riveting journey where laughs and tears will interchangeably affect the audience.

Zach Braff wrote and directed this warm story of hope, love, and friendship in the backdrop of life and death.  Braff, who also performed as the main character, creates a honestly ambiguous atmosphere where comedy and tragedy coexists as it does in life.  This roller coaster of happiness and sorrow is enhanced by the terrific mise-en-scene, cinematography, and a brilliantly performing cast.  Braff brings together the different cinematic aspects which leaves the audience with an excellent cinematic experience that opens with apathy and ends with heightened awareness.
