DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1931)

Dr. Jekyll has strong convictions that people consist of two personalities: one good and one evil.  The evil is the primitive part of self that all humans constantly work on inhibiting, yet it appears when humans commit heinous acts.  This leads Dr. Jekyll to researching how to isolate the evil portion of the human psyche in order to free mankind from evil.  However, something goes wrong as Dr. Jekyll uses himself as a test subject for his own experiments resulting in Mr. Hyde appearing from within himself.  Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a remarkable story based on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, which is brought alive through the terrific direction of Mamoulian.  The special effects must be mentioned as they are incredible for when the film was shot as they lend support to the gruesome, yet excellent tale of Dr. Jekyll's fate.
